About

My ignominious introduction to modern art happened at the age of seven when I attended a highly lauded Jackson Pollack show at MOMA in NYC. While strolling through the hushed gallery, I pronounced, quite loudly “But, mommy, he’s so messy”. Some laughed, acknowledging truth through a child’s eyes, while others looked at us in horror. My mother quietly moved me along.

When it comes to art, I know what I like and I know I don’t always get the “deeper meaning”.

A dear friend asked me to join the board of Sushi, A Center for The Urban Arts in San Diego. He really wanted me and my team’s marketing skills to help Sushi relaunch after four years of being homeless. I said OK, but knew I was entering a land that filled me with dread. After all, I know very little about performance art and it often makes me uncomfortable. My dear friend would say that’s the point.

So, I thought it would be helpful for all the other souls out there who are curious, but somewhat intimidated, to go on a journey with me as the new season kicks off. Because I am on the board I will have access to artists and will ask questions, take photos and hopefully learn more about what these artists are trying to express. I welcome you along to share your experience of Sushi, ask questions and let me know what the heck you think a show is all about.
